AFSCME Council 73 2011 Scholarship Winners – Below are the winners of this year’s scholarships and information about them. Once again, because of the Golf Outing, we were able to give out 9 scholarships of $1500.
Olivia Foltiny is the daughter of Miklos Foltiny. Miklos is a member of AFSCME Local 2285, Mercer Board of Social Services. Olivia graduated from Burlington High School with a 5.1 GPA and was active in the Literary club, Falcon club (students who receive all A’s) and Prism club. Olivia will be attending Moore College of Art and Design.
Kyra and Kara Dayon are the daughters of Coral and Kevin Dayon. Coral is President of AFSCME Local 2208, Trenton Psych and Kevin is a member. Kyra and Kara graduated from Trenton High School, where they were outstanding athletes. Kyra graduated with a 91.6 GPA and was ranked third in her class. Kara graduated with an 89.7 GPA and graduated 13th in her class. Kyra and Kara both were in the National Honor Society and both will be attending Farleigh Dickinson.
Kira Greenberg is the daughter of Caryl Greenberg. Caryl is a member of Local 2242, South Brunswick Township. Kira graduated from Golda Och Academy. Kira graduated with a 3.98 GPA and was a Student Ambassador, a Mentor, Prose editor of the literary magazine and Dance Team co-captain. Kira will be attending Vassar College.
Zachary Mintz is the son of Alice Weisman. Alice is a Council 73 Council Representative and a member of Local 956, Princeton University employees. Zach graduated from Hightstown High School with a 3.96 GPA. Zach was a member of the marching band, wind ensemble and robotics club. Zach will be attending St. Mary’s College in Maryland.
Max Beckerman is the son of Wendi Rottweiler. Wendi is former President of Local 2923, Woodbridge Library. Max graduated from South Brunswick High School with a 3.6 GPA. Max was a member of the Mock Trial club, history club and active on the school newspaper. Max also did an internship with Council 73’s attorney, Steve Weissman. Max will be attending Rutgers University.
Sarah Beernink is the daughter of Cindy Beernink. Cindy is a member of Local 3287, Warren County. Sarah graduated from Saucon Valley High School with a 3.87 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society. Sarah will be attending Marywood University.
Jake Cotton is the son Charlene Cotton. Charlene is a member of Local 3440, Middlesex County. Jake graduated from East Brunswick High School. Jake graduated with a 4.3 GPA and was a member of the National Honor Society. Jake was president of the German club and ran cross country. Jake won the 2011 President’s award for Educational Excellence. Jake will be attending Rutgers University.
Yassah Peace Johnson is the daughter of Edmund and Janet Johnson. Edmund is Vice President of local 2286, City of Trenton, and Janet is a member. Yassah graduated from Notre Dame High School with an 84.2 GPA. Yassah was a member of the cheerleading squad, dance club and tutored at Homefront. Yassah will be attending Syracuse University.
